Road Patching and Upcoming Repaving Project

The Village has received numerous calls and questions regarding the potholes along North Main Street between I94 and French Road. We are aware of the issues with the road conditions and continue to make this a priority for our Department of Public Works. The Village has patched this area multiple times with the changes in weather working against us. Unfortunately, due to the snow, salting and plowing of the road, the patch has not stuck and the potholes continue to be a concern for drivers and the Village. We are patching again this week (March 3, 2026) in the hopes that we can mitigate some of the worst pothole areas. The repaving of this section of road is associated with a MDOT Small Urban Grant that was presented at an informational meeting last spring in April of 2025. This repaving construction project is expected to start no later than July 8, 2026 and will be completed no later than November 15, 2026. Exact dates are at the discretion and schedule of MDOT. We will post updates as we get confirmation of dates for this project. For more information on this construction and upcoming projects within the Village, we have two monthly Council meetings on the 2nd and 4th Monday each month. You can also reach out to the Village Office at 269-668-2128 or offices@mattawanmi.com.

Snow Plowing/Street Cleaning
The Mattawan Public Works Department is responsible for the removal of snow from the streets throughout the Village. During the winter months, employees of the Department are available after hours on-call as needed to ensure the timely removal of snow and/or placement of salt, as conditions warrant. First priority for snow removal and salting are main streets and arteries. Second priority are collector streets, and lastly residential streets and cul-de-sacs.

Residents can assist in the snow removal program by following these guidelines:

All residents and property owners are reminded that it is against state law to dump snow onto public streets or snow plow across the road.

According to Village ordinances, no motor vehicle may be parked or allowed to remain on Village streets from 3am to 6am November 1st through April 1st. Any vehicle in violation of this ordinance shall be considered a traffic hazard, and will be cited.

The Village does not service private properties, including clearing of driveway entrances or postal boxes along the roadside.

Street Light Problems

The Village of Mattawan is not responsible for the maintenance or replacement of street lights. Electricity Utility Companies replace these directly and all concerns or requests for light replacement must be submitted directly to them. To report to Indiana Michigan Power use the following link https://www.indianamichiganpower.com/outages/problem/leased-light. To report to Midwest Energy and Communications (MEC) email them directly at Dispatch@teammidwest.com.

EMERGENCY SIRENS

The Mattawan Fire Department has emergency sirens throughout the district for notification of an emergency. For a Fire, the siren is up and down 5 times. For a tornado warning, it is a single non-ascending or descending tone for three minutes. Testing of the siren takes place each day at noon. If you have any questions feel free to reach out the Village Office at 269-668-2128.
